Course Introduction

We’ll dive deeply into the nature of presence, and how learning the Wheel of Awareness practice can build skills of focused attention, open awareness, and kind intention that research suggests are the three pillars of mind training that have been empirically shown to cultivate these important aspects of flourishing. 

Health and healing each derive from the notion of a whole, the core of spiritual growth, the heart of scientific inquiry, and the setting for our exploration of what it means to awaken the mind, to be present, to be aware.

We’ll be exploring the impact of consciousness in the cultivation of well-being in your personal and professional life. You will also learn practical ways to apply deep insights into the nature of being aware itself, learning to “integrate consciousness.” 

What does “integrate consciousness” mean?

By exploring the self-organizational role of our mental lives and the foundation of integration—the linking of differentiated parts of a system—we can then experience this “integration of consciousness” with a simple but powerful practice I developed for use with my students and patients called the “Wheel of Awareness.“ Integration plays a central role in our health and well-being as it builds resilience and inner strength.  It is a simple but powerful tool that deepens our understanding of the mind and strengthens our capacities of attention, awareness, and positive intention.

What does Meditation mean?

Meditation simply means training the mind. I’ve used the Wheel of Awareness with tens of thousands of students around the world with exciting benefits—including achieving a sense of clarity and calm as well as new insights into the nature of our lives, inside and out. It offers a way to weave the three research-based pillars of mind training into one practice strengthening the focus of attention, opening awareness, and building kind intention. These three pillars have been demonstrated to enhance health in several ways, including reducing stress, improving immune and cardiovascular functions, altering epigenetic regulation to reduce bodily inflammation, and optimizing the enzyme, telomerase that maintains and repairs the ends of our chromosomes.

Meet Your Teacher

Dr. Dan Siegel

Dr. Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute which focuses on the development of mindsight, teaches insight, empathy, and integration in individuals, families and communities.

Dr. Siegel has published extensively for both professional and lay audiences. His five New York Times bestsellers are: Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence, Mind: A Journey to the Heart of Being Human, Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain, and two books with Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D: The Whole-Brain Child, and No-Drama Discipline. His other books include: The Developing Mind, The Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology, Mindsight, The Mindful Brain, and The Mindful Therapist. He has also written The Yes Brain and The Power of Showing Up with Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D. Additionally, Dr. Siegel serves as the Founding Editor for the Norton Professional Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology which currently contains over seventy textbooks.

Dr. Siegel is well-known for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible, and provides plenty of detailed applications to our work and personal lives.  Rest assured that prerequisites and/or a science background are not required in order to benefit from this course.

Once you enroll in the class, you will receive details from the Mindsight Institute via email regarding access to your course and the online learning community. These emails will be sent prior to the first day of the class.We will be rolling out two lectures each week. You will receive access to the first two lectures prior to the first day of the course being live and open, and then the next set of lectures will be made available to you in the following week, and so on…This is a self-paced program and you will be able to learn at your convenience. We do, however, encourage you to take part in the online learning community, and to join the 3 live, weekly Q & A sessions with Dan to ask questions and discuss material suggested in the corresponding course sequence.
