Interpresonal, Temporal & State:

Viewing energy and information flow as the essence of mind enables a clinician to extend the work of “mental health” beyond just the individual’s experience and into the realm of the interpersonal.  How this flow is shared between two individuals, or within a group or family setting, is how mind is “between” and can be assessed clinically as involving the differentiation and linkage of flow or impediments to these central functions of integration. Relationship distress moves toward chaos and rigidity; cultivating integration moves the relational system towards the FACES flow of harmony.  By viewing mind as a facet of energy flow also enables the experience of time to be viewed in clinically useful manner.  On one level of large objects called “macrostates,” an Arrow of Time exists with its directionality of change.  But at the microstate level, physics reveals, there is no Arrow of Time, no directionality of change.  This differentiated micro- and macro- level of reality is detected by the finding that Newtonian Classical physics properties of macrostates are what individuals learn by living in a macrostate body; yet some aspects of mind, such as pure awareness, may have microstate quantum features which can be differentiated and linked within temporal integration to make sense of such otherwise perplexing contrasts in ways of experiencing reality. Other aspects of temporal integration include the linking of the differentiated contrasts of a longing for certainty in the face of uncertainty; a longing for permanence in the face of transience; and a longing for immortality in the face of the reality of mortality.  A final domain of integration refers to that of identity, addressing the fundamental experience of having an inner, familial, and cultural sense of self with the inherent evolutionary biases of “in-group” and “out-group” distinctions.  Identity integration enables a clinician to work along the whole continuum of domains to address these fundamental ways we come to define who we are and how we live in the complex, ever-changing and ever-more interconnected world we share.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Differentiate the quantum and Newtonian classical physics aspects of experience from the viewpoint of IPNB.
  2. Evaluate issues of mortality, uncertainty, and transience and the experience of the Arrow of Time in support of temporal integration
  3. Reframe the experience of identity from an interpersonal neurobiology lens
  4. Assess the evolutionary, cultural, and familial aspects of identity
  5. Formulate how to support integration of identity to bring more compassion and kindness into the world
  6. Identify key features of secure attachment and how they relate to adult-adult relationships
