Mindsight Colloquium
For 2010-2011 in Los Angeles, CA
The Mindsight Colloquium offers an opportunity to explore intensively the new, exciting interdisciplinary field called interpersonal neurobiology (“IPNB”) through immersive and active participation by the participants. Dr. Dan Siegel will facilitate the Colloquium. The Colloquium invites participants to actively contribute their own work, studies, and reflections on aspects of the topics relevant to deepening the understanding of the connections among the mind, the brain, and human relationships. At the heart of the Colloquium experience will be in-depth discussions that will catalyze advanced learning. Readings will be assigned as the Colloquium evolves in order to inform our exploration of related science and its practical applications.
Colloquium Topics for 2010-2011:
- How can the consilient approach of IPNB be extended into the broader fields of the healing arts and education?
- What are the scientific underpinnings that may be at play in the finding that philosophy of mind, science of mind, education, and mental health have not had a working definition of what the mind is?
- How do you apply the principles of IPNB in your own professional work?
- In the field of education, what are the basic shifts that need to occur to promote social and emotional learning in combination with teachings about the brain and mental health?
- Why do modern neuroscientists often dismiss the differences between the two hemispheres of the brain? And why are we asking this question?
- What are the fundamental mechanisms underlying cultural change and how can they be applied in your own professional culture to promote compassion, empathy and resilience?
- What are the personal and professional challenges you face in your individual work that make incorporating IPNB into your endeavors the most difficult?
- How can the group support your efforts to integrate this approach into your own therapeutic or educational pursuits?
Required Reading:
- The Mindful Therapist: A clinician’s guide to mindsight and neural integration (DJ Siegel, 2010)
- The Other Brain: From dementia to schizophrenia, how new discoveries about the brain are revolutionizing medicine and science (R Fields, 2009)
- The Social Neuroscience of Empathy (edited by J. Decety and W Ickes, 2009)
- The Psychophysiology of Self-Awareness: Rediscovering the lost art of body sense (A Fogel, 2009)
The Facts:
- A maximum of 20 people will be admitted into the group by application only.
- Each academic year the Colloquium meets ten times for two hours, Fridays starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Mindsight Institute in Brentwood.
- The Colloquium is designed for professionals in various clinical fields within mental health and medicine, but attendance may be open to others as space permits.
- This is an engaging group participant format, not a lecture series. Participant contributors are expected to be active members of an immersive learning environment that will be facilitated by Dr. Siegel.
- Participants will be expected to contribute at least two twenty-minute presentations regarding their own work, readings, and application of the IPNB principles. Dr. Siegel will offer active feedback and respond to each of these formal presentations.
- Active interaction among participant contributors will be encouraged via online groups and in-person meetings. The goal of the Colloquium is to promote intensive study and an engaged participation in learning and applying the ideas of IPNB to your professional world and the larger community.
- CEUs are available for mental health practitioners: psychologists, social workers and marriage and family therapists receive 2 hours credit for each session attended.
- Physicians may receive 2 hours of CME credit for each session attended.
- This is not a process group, therapy group, or clinical supervision group. The purpose of this Colloquium is for education and professional development.
